Producer George Martin did not approve of\r\nRingo Starr’s drumming for studio work. It was the norm\r\nat that time to have a specialist studio drummer who knew\r\nthe ways of studio work. Starr was relegated to playing\r\ntambourine on “Love Me Do” while White played his drum\r\nkit. “P.S. I Love You” was also recorded during this session\r\nwith White playing a “lightweight cha-cha-chá beat” on\r\nbongos rather than drums. White says he was paid £5 for\r\nthe session and 10 shillings for bringing his drum kit, and\r\ndid not earn any royalties from the sale of the records.\r\nThis was the only time White played with the Beatles, but\r\nit was enough to get him “into the history books”, and\r\nthe distinction of being one of the so-called “fifth Beatles”.\r\nWhite said that on that day in the studio the only members\r\nof the Beatles he worked with were Paul McCartney and\r\nJohn Lennon, because they were the songwriters. “They\r\ndidn’t use any written music, and what I had to do was play\r\nthe routines with them to get an idea what they wanted\r\nbefore we could even start recording.” Fast forward to 2008,\r\nBeatles expert Tom Frangione introduced White to the\r\nSmithereens. The band asked White to record with them\r\non their next Beatles tribute album at their House of Vibes\r\nrecording studio in Highland Park, NJ. “P.S. I Love You” was\r\nreleased late in 2008 on B-Sides the Beatles; “Love Me Do”\r\nwas recorded, but not released until now.\n\nSIDE A: Love Me Do SIDE B: P.S.
