But he understood his own mission remarkably well and has remained undaunted by the hype. His second, double-length long-player Heaven and Earth was announced via tweet: \"The Earth side.represents the world as I see it outwardly, the world that I am part of. The Heaven side.represents the world as I see it inwardly, the world that is a part of me.\" Washington reassembled his Next Step band -- which includes bassists Miles Mosely and Stephen \"Thundercat\" Bruner, drummers Ronald Bruner, Jr. and Tony Austin, trombonist Ryan Porter, pianist Cameron Graves, keyboardist Brandon Coleman, and vocalist Patrice Quinn -- supplemented by a jazz orchestra, West Coast Get Down, a symphony orchestra, and choir.\n\u003cbr\u003eHeaven and Earth is a major dose of Afro-Futurism. Earth opens with a killer cover of the theme from Bruce Lee's Fist of Fury, retitled in plural here. Quinn and Dwight Trible duet on lead vocals backed by a soaring, sweeping choir atop a cooking Latin jazz groove complete with montunos from Graves and a raw-boned solo from Washington (who is on fire throughout). The other cover is a funky take on Freddie Hubbard's \"Hub-Tones,\" with layers of propulsive Latin rhythms. Dontae Winslow's jagged trumpet solo cuts across the mix before Washington's tenor answers. Of the originals, \"Connections\" is a space jazz embrace of hard bop and 20th century West Coast jazz, with great solos from Porter and Winslow, while \"Testify\" owes as much to Caribbean grooves and soul as jazz. Heaven commences with the spectral \"The Space Traveler's Lullaby,\" with its gorgeous warm brass and reeds, swelling symphony strings, and soaring wordless chorus sounds like the Gil Evans and Sun Ra orchestras playing together. \"Vi Lua Vi Sol\" features a vocoder vocal from Coleman, with Porter blowing fills and a beefy solo, swooping synth lines atop Afrobeat drumming, and a popping upright bassline. The breaks and future funk of \"Street Fighter Mas\" owes equally to Miles Davis, Lamar, and Earth Wind and Fire as the choir extrapolates on the harmonics before Washington's skittering R\u0026amp;B-drenched solo. \"Song for the Fallen\" weds angular avant-jazz and future funk to wiry fusion and a multivalent rhythmic attack -- with the choir adding a celestial bent. Heaven and Earth is more a refinement of the ideas expressed on The Epic than an entirely new paradigm. There is less wandering, more focus, more inquiry and directed movement, as well as an abundance of colorful tonal and harmonic contrasts. More than anything else, it establishes Washington as a composer and arranger of dizzying potential and still underscores his twin rep as a soloist and jazz conceptualist. This music is compiled from four privately pressed cassettes (Turiya Sings [1982]; Divine Songs [1987]; Infinite Chants [1992], and Glorious Chants [1995]) that Coltrane distributed to members of the Sai Antaram Ashram (which she founded) between 1982 and 1995. Some were recorded in professional studios; all were engineered by Baker Bigsby -- who oversaw the tape transfers here from the masters -- and represent a startling chapter in her musical legacy. The music exists in the space where \"ecstatic\" meets \"heavy.\" Coltrane, known to her followers as Turiyasangitananda (\"the Transcendental Lord's highest song of bliss\"), brought all of her musical history to bear in these pieces, from her beginnings playing piano in the churches of Detroit and the hard bop she played there to Paris and New York, to the vanguard, which she embraced with openness and helped to redefine with a softer, more spacious approach.\n\u003cbr\u003eThe most amazing aspect of this music is what few have heard before: Coltrane's very deep and physical singing voice; her lead vocals are featured on most of the album, and it's another instrument she commands (though she wouldn't see it that way). On \"Om Shanti,\" she accompanies herself on organ using breath control in an airy, devoted chant. On \"Rama Rama,\" sarod, tablas, and her Oberheim synth add blissful dimensions to her quietly passionate singing. \"Keshavas Murahara\" commences with strings (her chart), Oberheim, and droning organ; her voice emerges as if from smoke, slowly intoning the prayer, dirge-like, but jazz informs her phrasing as the synth winds around her voice. The first half of \"Journey in Satchidananda\" features only her organ and Oberheim. It's droning, bluesy, and heavy -- nearly Gothic. When the Ashram Singers come in and Joshua Spiegelman adds a flute, some light enters. Tamil singer Sairam Iyer solos in his own language, opening the heart of the chant and bringing it home. Harp makes its presence felt on \"Er Ra,\" where Coltrane's playing moves across Eastern and Western modes as her singing emerges in sweet, blues-inflected lines. The double-disc soundtrack contains the entire concert.\n\u003cbr\u003eDisc one begins with Whalum playing solo on \"Call to Worship,\" a Coltrane-esque recitation of hymns in modal fashion. Things get funkier on the New Orleans-inspired funky yet straight-ahead jazz in Whalum's original \"Fit to Battle,\" before moving toward Latin-tinged jazz on \"Ananias and Sapphira.\" Hathaway and Stoddart do a lovely job on the Nat Adderley-Luther Vandross tune \"Make Me a Believer\"; they are stellar on \"He's Been Just That Good,\" and Stoddardt shines on his original \"If You Ever Need Me,\" with inventive and elegant scat singing. Duke's piano is gorgeously lyrical on \"Because You Loved Me.\" Disc two contains the funky soul-jazz of \"Jesus Africa Jesus,\" with its faux reggae rhythm section underscoring Whalum's soprano before it becomes a rap tune. Hathaway makes a return appearance on his \"It's What I Do,\" and on a very contemporary gospel reading of \"The Thrill Is Gone\" that keeps B.B. King's blues feel intact. One of the two bonus tracks features Bishop T.D. Jakes and his wife Serita on \"You Are Everything,\" that echoes Barry White's amorous recitations -- only quite wholesomely -- to close it out. As the story goes, in response to a musicians union restriction, Thielemans was forbidden to play guitar at a gig. So, he pulled out his harmonica. The rest, as they say, is history. He went on to have a long and prolific career on the instrument, as both a band leader and session musician. With his unique sound, he became a go-to for film scores in the 1970s (The Pawn Broker, Midnight Cowboy). Perhaps most notably, Thielemans is unconsciously known to generations for having played the melody on Sesame Streets famous closing theme. Organized as a purely jazz session, the date here prominently features a young Joanne Brackeen on piano. It is perhaps Brackeens presence that makes this set so interesting. As an avant-garde player she provides the vehicle for Thielemas to explore more advanced ideas. Between 1948 and 1950, he was a member of Miles Davis group, and participated in the recordings that would eventually be collected and released as Birth of The Cool.  \r\n\r\nWith a trio featuring Lighthouse All-Star alum Jimmy Rowles on piano and Michael Moore on bass, Kontiz called out old and familiar songs.  The intention was to let the tunes happen as only finely tuned jazz musicians of certain experience can.
