Put them together, and in this context you don't get the Blasters, but you do get something that recalls a bit of the wild fun that band knew how to conjure. To honor Bradley's passing, Dunham\/Daptone Records has released Black Velvet, a collection of rarities and unreleased material that Bradley cut during his tenure with the label, and while this album lacks the thematic coherence of the three LPs he cut in his lifetime, this certainly demonstrates the skill, passion, and emotional intelligence that Bradley brought to his music. Working with producer and bandleader Tommy \"TNT\" Brenneck, Bradley consistently delivered performances that made clear he wasn't merely inspired by legendary vocalists like Otis Redding, James Brown, and Wilson Pickett, he fashioned a style that took elements of their trademark sounds and fused it into a musical imagination with a lyrical gift that was very much his own. Matched by the rich dynamics of Brenneck's backing tracks, Bradley sings his stories of life and love with a straight-from-the-gut sound that's genuine and never histrionic, no matter how forceful he sounds. Since Bradley had an unexpected success with his cover of Black Sabbath's \"Changes,\" it should surprise no one that there are some offbeat takes on rock tunes included on this set, and he transforms Nirvana's \"Stay Away\" so totally that you might not recognize it at first, and while his take on Neil Young's \"Heart of Gold\" follows the original a bit more closely, the weary grit of his interpretation captures the sorrow and introspection of Young's lyrics brilliantly. Surprisingly, Quality Street isn't as sleepy as its predecessor, 2011's The Old Magic, a charmingly low-key collection whose pulse rarely quickened. That's not the case with Quality Street, which opens with a kicking rockabilly revision of the traditional \"Children Go Where I Send Thee,\" a cut that rocks harder than anything on The Old Magic. It's not the only thing here with a swinging backbeat, either. \"The North Pole Express\" swings loose and low; \"Rise Up Shepherd\" skips to a sprightly country beat; Lowe strips away the excesses on Roy Wood's \"I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day\" so it grooves along to a R\u0026amp;B beat and, best of all, there's a witty rock \u0026amp; roll revamp of \"Silent Night\" that is perhaps the biggest surprise on this seasonal platter. Elsewhere, Lowe does get dreamy -- on a lovely version of Boudleaux Bryant's \"Christmas Can't Be Far Away,\" on a cheerful, sparkling take on Ron Sexsmith's \"Hooves on the Roof,\" on a gentle version of Roger Miller's \"Little Toy Trains,\" and on his own originals \"I Was Born in Bethlehem\" and \"A Dollar Short of Happy\" -- but the song that captures the slyly humorous spirit of the whole endeavor is \"Christmas at the Airport,\" where Nick is snowed in at the airport on Christmas day by the \"deep and crisp and evil\" snow. Given the excellent singles she recorded for Desco beginning in the late '90s, it seems like she would have gotten the opportunity for a full-length sooner; plus, her brand of raw, heavy, hard-driving funk is such a throwback to the '70s, and she pulls it off so well, that you wonder how she could have escaped that decade without at least a few rare, classic 45s (in the vein of labelmate Lee Fields). It's not hard to believe she once made her living as a prison guard, based on the tough-as-nails, no-nonsense performances she belts out on Dap Dippin' With Sharon Jones \u0026amp; the Dap-Kings, the first full-length release on Desco's descendant, Dap-Tone. Backed by the Dap-Tone house band (a conglomeration of studio pros with connections reaching back to the Desco orbit), Jones delivers a storming set of tunes that would have sounded perfectly at home on the James Brown's Original Funky Divas compilation. The style and quality are pretty consistent all the way through, but it's hard not to single out the nearly unrecognizable cover of Janet Jackson's \"What Have You Done for Me Lately,\" which is transformed into a churning blast of funk full of biting guitars (and nary a synth or drum machine in sight). Other highlights include the chunky leadoff track, \"Got a Thing on My Mind,\" the would-be dance-craze \"The Dap Dip,\" the slow-burning \"Make It Good to Me,\" and the trials-and-tribulations tale \"Ain't It Hard.\" Plus, label head Gabriel Roth throws in his usual \"authentic\" trappings -- the fake live introduction running down Jones' \"hits,\" the intentionally dated copy on the back cover -- that make the whole package even more fun. This music is compiled from four privately pressed cassettes (Turiya Sings [1982]; Divine Songs [1987]; Infinite Chants [1992], and Glorious Chants [1995]) that Coltrane distributed to members of the Sai Antaram Ashram (which she founded) between 1982 and 1995. Some were recorded in professional studios; all were engineered by Baker Bigsby -- who oversaw the tape transfers here from the masters -- and represent a startling chapter in her musical legacy. The music exists in the space where \"ecstatic\" meets \"heavy.\" Coltrane, known to her followers as Turiyasangitananda (\"the Transcendental Lord's highest song of bliss\"), brought all of her musical history to bear in these pieces, from her beginnings playing piano in the churches of Detroit and the hard bop she played there to Paris and New York, to the vanguard, which she embraced with openness and helped to redefine with a softer, more spacious approach.\n\u003cbr\u003eThe most amazing aspect of this music is what few have heard before: Coltrane's very deep and physical singing voice; her lead vocals are featured on most of the album, and it's another instrument she commands (though she wouldn't see it that way). On \"Om Shanti,\" she accompanies herself on organ using breath control in an airy, devoted chant. On \"Rama Rama,\" sarod, tablas, and her Oberheim synth add blissful dimensions to her quietly passionate singing. \"Keshavas Murahara\" commences with strings (her chart), Oberheim, and droning organ; her voice emerges as if from smoke, slowly intoning the prayer, dirge-like, but jazz informs her phrasing as the synth winds around her voice. The first half of \"Journey in Satchidananda\" features only her organ and Oberheim. It's droning, bluesy, and heavy -- nearly Gothic. When the Ashram Singers come in and Joshua Spiegelman adds a flute, some light enters. Tamil singer Sairam Iyer solos in his own language, opening the heart of the chant and bringing it home. Harp makes its presence felt on \"Er Ra,\" where Coltrane's playing moves across Eastern and Western modes as her singing emerges in sweet, blues-inflected lines. Luaka Bop did everything right for The Ecstatic Music of Alice Coltrane Turyirasangitananda, from getting full participation from her family to create an amazing package with a great long essay by Ashley Khan, to reminiscences, to excellent sound. This is not just ecstatic music, but cosmic soul music. Bradley's deep, soulful reading of Black Sabbath's \"Changes\" (from 1972's Vol. 4) became something of a viral sensation when it first surfaced on a Record Store Day single in 2013. Now it's become the title track and cornerstone of Bradley's third album, and in this context it doesn't sound like a novelty, but like the striking, deeply felt performance it truly is. As on his two previous albums, Bradley is one of the most authentic-sounding artists in the 2010s retro-soul sweepstakes on Changes. The production by Thomas Brenneck is straightforward but naturalistically effective, and puts Bradley's rough but passionate vocals in engaging relief with the accompanists. (Most of the album features the Menahan Street Band backing Bradley, though the Budos Band does the honors on two cuts.) Most of the songs on Changes are new, but they sound like they could have been prize Atlantic or Stax rarities from the mid-'60s, and the performances honor the sound and the emotional power of classic soul. Bradley spent years imitating James Brown, and the influence of Mr. Dynamite is still audible on many of these tunes. But since he launched his belated recording career, Bradley has developed a greater sense of self and more confidence in his own musical personality. On Changes, the rough-hewn power of Bradley's voice is at its most powerful, and there's a fierce sense of longing and need in this music that's almost tactile in its realism. Charles Bradley doesn't sound like a '60 soul singer, he sounds like a great soul singer regardless of era. And Changes shows Bradley still has plenty of new ground to explore at the age of 68. The material is less dark in its vision -- perhaps reflecting the turn in Bradley's life circumstances -- but is no less poignant. His voice is no less gritty, his scream no less heart wrenching, his emotion no less forthcoming. Opener \"Strictly Reserved for You\" has an uptown, funky bassline and fuzztone guitar. The sweet backing vocals soften Bradley's wrenching toughness enough to make it vulnerable. \"Let Love Stand a Chance\" is brimming with a slow burning tenderness that beseeches the absent beloved to hear him out. One has to wonder who could refuse a request so searingly rendered. \"Where Do We Go from Here\" and \"Confusion\" are drenched in urgent, bristling, psychedelic funk, with wah-wah guitars, fuzzed-out bass, and organ. \"Love Bug Blues,\" is a roiling soulful blues. \"You Put the Flame on It,\" with its uplifting interaction between singer and backing chorus, and underscored by horns, weds world-weariness and optimism. \"Hurricane\" finds Bradley flanked by horns and B-3 on one side and his backing chorus on the other. He's testifying to the calamities and darkness in the human heart -- with some wild phase shifting on the instrumental backing. The set ends with \"Through the Storm\" -- it's spiritual soul that could easily be taken as an offering of gratitude to fans. The shimmering guitars, vibes, and slippery, funky snare, frame the horns which in turn accent Bradley's absolute conviction that he's come through the worst. Victim of Love showcases growth -- and a sound not heard before on Daptone -- while not straying from the gritty soul that established the singer; it is every bit as strong as its predecessor and more diverse.
